ContextIt is estimated1 that there are currently 350,000 children of problem drug users in the UK, and more than 1 million children whose parent has a problem with alcohol. The adverse consequences of parental problem substance use are multiple and cumulative, and can result in children becoming damaged and disadvantaged in profound ways. A child's physical, psychological, social and interpersonal health and development is at risk of significant harm when a parent is also an adult who has a substance use problem. Sadly, we are still operating in a drug & alcohol treatment culture which focuses almost solely on the adult user themselves, without paying attention to their parental role, or offering help to dependent children and families. It is true to say that risk of harm to children can be reduced by effective treatment and support for the affected parent/s. However it is becoming more widely accepted that in order to help these families become safer and healthier for children, and to maintain lasting change, it is essential to offer a treatment option that is holistic and family focused. |
